Tax Scam Alert: Text Messages Pretending to be from Official State Tax and Revenue Agencies

Scammers are sending phishing text messages to taxpayers about income tax refunds. The Tax Department does not use text messages, email, or social media to request personal tax information.

What this scam looks like:

These text messages request accurate payment information, supposedly so tax and revenue agencies can deposit money into taxpayers' bank accounts. See an example of this scam text message, so you know what to watch out for.

What to do if you receive a text like this:

If you receive a text message that appears to be from the New York State Tax Department: 

  • Block the sender

  • Delete the message 

  • Report this scam to the Tax Department or IRS
