Vanessa Bellucci Markos grew up working with her family-owned and operated home health care companies. After graduating from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and a minor in philosophy, she worked with her mother full-time, performing management and operations tasks.

But Ms. Markos always knew that she wanted a degree in law, and she worked very diligently to accomplish that. She continued to work part-time with her mother when she started her studies at New York Law School in 2009.

After the untimely death of her parents in 2010, the family home care companies— with over 100 employees— were left without a principal to oversee the operations. Ms. Markos stepped into her mother’s shoes while simultaneously continuing her legal studies. She was admitted to practice law in 2013.

Ms. Markos ran the family businesses for several more years until she decided that she wanted to focus exclusively on law with an emphasis on helping the communities that she came to hold so dear: the senior population, families, entrepreneurs, and small business owners.

Her experience as the administrator of a small, family owned and operated home care company gives Ms. Markos a unique, first-hand perspective of the issues plaguing seniors, and makes her particularly understanding and empathetic toward their unique needs. She has seen just how costly long-term care can be, and that is why both estate planning and Medicaid planning are so important to her.

Ms. Markos’s work as a self-employed business owner enabled her to gain invaluable experience interpreting, understanding, and navigating government regulations in the heavily-regulated healthcare industry and other areas pertinent to all business-owners, such as general corporate law, wage and hour application and employment law.

Ms. Markos’s love for drafting estate planning documents extends to individuals at all stages of life. She feels particularly passionate about helping young individuals and families plan for their future, making sure their wishes for their assets and their plan for their children’s wellbeing in the event of a parent’s untimely death are well-thought out, memorialized and honored.

One of her favorite aspects of practicing law is meeting with clients and learning the specific nuances of their families. She diligently tailors their documents for their very specific needs, anticipating the types of scenarios and issues that could come up — whether that is in one’s personal life via an estate plan, between individuals, or in a business.

Running her own small business for several years gives Ms. Markos the insight necessary to foresee the types of issues small businesses face, particularly during the start-up period if their contracts and documents are not in order.

Ms. Markos’s intention is to help keep clients out of court and away from litigation. She uses estate planning, business counseling and contracts to set forth a roadmap that is intended to guide her clients away from future legal issues and disagreements that may require judicial intervention.

Ms. Markos enjoys being a part of the McKernan Law team because she feels that the firm provides an important service to their local community as a true neighborhood practice. She loves that the McKernan Law office is a friendly and welcoming environment, and that she and Mr. McKernan share a rapport and level of trust with one another only found on a team.
