When is Traveling for Work Compensable?

Curious about when traveling for work is compensable? Whether you're an employer or an employee, understanding the intricacies of work-related travel is essential!

  • Home-to-Work Travel…
This is considered ordinary travel and not work time.

  • Travel That is All in the Day's Work…
If the travel is part of a principal activity, such as traveling from one job site to another job site during the workday, then it must be counted as hours worked.

  • Home-to-Work Travel on a Special One-Day Assignment in Another City…
If the same day is work time except the employer may deduct time employees would normally spend commuting.

  • Travel Away from Home Community…
Travel that keeps your employee away from home overnight is travel away from the home community. Travel away from home is clearly hours worked when it takes place during your employee's regularly scheduled hours of work. He or she is simply substituting travel for other duties.

  • Driving Time…
Time spent traveling during normal work hours is considered compensable work time.

  • Riding Time…
Must be counted as hours worked if required.
